Accountability

"For those that live shall inherit the earth,
and those that die shall rest from all their labors,
and their works shall follow them;
and they shall receive a crown in the mansions of my Father,
which I have prepared for them." D&C 59:2

The day will come when we will have the opportunity to stand before God to be judged in terms of the decisions we make and the deeds we perform in this life. " 'It is requisite with the justice of God that me should be judged according to their works,' Alma says, 'and if their works were good in this life, and the desires of their hearts were good, that they should also, at the last day, be restored unto that which is good.' (ALMA 41:3-4). The kind of body gained in this life and restored to a person in the resurrection determines the degree of glory inherited in eternity. Thus men are 'their own judges,' Alma concludes, for by their daily acts they judge or choose 'whether to do good or do evil' (ALMA 41:7)." (Elder McConkie, Mormon Doctrine, p. 403-404)

"Are we not the framers of our own destiny? Are we not the arbitrators of our fate? It is our privilege to determine our own exaltation or degradation; it is our privilege to determine our own happiness or misery in the world to come. Each of you has an eternal calling from which no Church officer has authority to release you. This is a calling given you by our Heavenly Father Himself. In this eternal calling, as with all other callings, you have a stewardship, and "it is required of the Lord, at the the hand of every steward, to render an account of his stewardship, both in time and in eternity." (D&C 72:3) This most important stewardship is the glorious responsibility your Father in Heaven has given you to watch over and care for your own soul. At some future day, you and I will each hear the voice of the Lord calling us forward to render an account of our mortal stewardship. This accounting will occur when we are called up to stand before the Lord at the great and judgment day." ~Elder Wirthlin
